What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a strong emotion that can influence the body in a number of ways. Anxiety can present emotionally through worried thoughts and feelings of tension or through physical changes, such as gastrointestinal issues or high blood pressure. Everyone has experienced anxiety at some point in their life, but what is the difference between feeling anxious and having an anxiety disorder? The psychiatrists at Serenity Mental Health Centers are committed to helping patients figure out if they are experiencing feelings of anxiety or if they have an anxiety-related disorder. We will work one-on-one with each of our patients to determine if they are experiencing prolonged anxiousness, diagnose what type of anxiety disorder they may have, and the best way to treat the anxiety. We understand how scary it can be to try and navigate this condition, but we are here to help. The professionals at Serenity can provide you with the support and care needed to live life freely.

How Is Anxiety Treated?

Every individual that walks through our door is different. We recognize that our patients may experience different forms of anxiety, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. There is not a one-size-fits-all solution to treating anxiety. Our team has created a safe and comfortable environment where each patient can ask questions, share concerns, and discuss available treatment options. We want to find a treatment that works for each patient without compromising any of their standards. To do that, we offer several treatment options for anxiety, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine IV therapy. Our team is here to support each patient through their journey to improved mental wellness.

What Are the Causes and Symptoms of Anxiety?

Anxiety can be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Stressful life events, such as trauma or significant changes, can trigger anxiety, while genetic predispositions and brain chemistry also play roles. Common symptoms of anxiety include persistent worry, restlessness, and physical symptoms like increased heart rate, sweating, and muscle tension. Additionally, individuals may experience difficulty concentrating, irritability, and sleep disturbances. Identifying and addressing these causes and symptoms is essential for effective management and treatment of anxiety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are generalized anxiety disorder and general anxiety the same thing?

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and general anxiety are not the same thing. While general anxiety is a reaction most people will have during stressful or uncertain situations, generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by much more severe worry regarding everyday things. Those who have GAD may worry for no apparent reason and don’t know how to stop this cycle.

If your partner has anxiety, the first thing to remember is that anxiety is not something someone can just snap out of. However, armored with the right support, help, and information, your partner may be able to overcome these tendencies. If your partner is suffering with anxiety, a few things you can do include:

  • Reassure them that they will be okay
  • Stay calm and patient
  • Don’t make them feel guilty
  • Ask them how you can help them in the moment

If you have a family member with generalized anxiety disorder, you may be more likely to develop anxiety yourself. Research supports that genes may play a role; however, it’s unclear how the conditions are passed from family member to family member.
